At a Bogota call center operators put the hard sell on customers from all over the Spanish speaking world. They work for Unisono; it's one of more than a dozen international call centers located in Bogota, where one of the key attractions is the way people talk. Ana Iglesias is a Spaniard who runs the Unisono office here. She says Colombian Spanish is easy on the ears, and that helps her operators close deals.

Many language experts say the Spanish spoken in the Colombian capital is the most easily understood. There's no strong accent and not much slang. Colombian 1)linguist Fernando Avila says that the Spanish spoken here is even clearer than that spoken in Spain. Avila says that even academics in Spain agree that Colombian Spanish is the best.

At the Centauro sound studio in downtown Bogota, a voice coach helps an acting student improve his lines. Besides dubbing, actors here are often called upon to record commercials for Mexican and Argentine products. National Geographic and the Discovery Channels often use Colombian narrators for their Spanish-language broadcasts, while Bogota native Patricia Janiot is the main news anchor for CNN is en Español.

Back when the 2)Conquistadors were imposing Spanish on the New World, Bogota was built high in the Andes Mountains and was, for centuries, cut off from outsiders. The city's European 3)descendents valued their old world traditions, and rejected local Indian culture. What's more, a number of Colombian presidents were poets and novelists who took great care to speak and promote proper Spanish. So perhaps it's no surprise that the book Correct Spanish for Dummies was written by a Colombian.
