Host: The world of cyber-bullying has been put in the spotlight by a video made by five elementary students in Spanoway.
Hostess: The cartoon video we first showed you last night depicts five girls describing ways to kill a fellow classmate.
Reporter: It was the talk of school today.
Student A: They were like, “Oh my God, it’s so horrible!” and then all the people were like, “Oh my God, that’s funny!”
Student B: I think that’s messed up.
Reporter: A cartoon called “Top Six Ways to Kill Piper”: five girls shooting Piper, pushing her off a cliff, even making Piper kill herself. But Piper isn’t a cartoon. She’s a real girl, a sixth grader at Elk Plain School of Choice, and the girls believed to have produced the video are her classmates.
Piper: But it was beyond funny stuff. It really, really hurt my feelings. I mean, if somebody could hate me that much to make a video about me like that, it made me feel, like, really bad.
Reporter: “Cyber-bullying, as it’s called, happens more often than we realize”, says Officer Lynn Mok, a cyber-bully expert with the Gig Harbor Police Department.
Mok: A lot of parents have no idea what’s going on out there, but the kids know.
Reporter: Mok says this type of behavior often happens at the elementary and middle school level. As far as this incident, the Bethel School District will only say it has taken care of the situation but cannot take action beyond a1)suspension. And Mok says, in most cases that’s true.
Mok: Yeah, and 70% of this stuff happens at home, 20% of it happens at friends’ house, so parents really need to stay involved and keep in touch with what’s going on with the Internet.
Reporter: This latest incident, according to Mok, is a perfect example of how parents on both sides of the situation must stay 2)vigilant.
