The 25-year-old non-smoking, non-drinking, anti-drug singer, who has produced a string of hip-hop hits is a real role model for 5)disadvantaged Swedish youngsters.
The kid from the wrong side of the tracks is now a teen 6)pin-up. Adam is performing for a good cause:7)Amnesty International. He wants to be more than just an entertainer. He wants to set a good example.
Audience: He’s a role model, because he had a difficult childhood but he’s done well for himself.
Adam is the proud owner of a 8)Swedish Grammy and he’s a firm favourite on MTV, showing that his principles haven’t got in the way of his success.
Adam: My message comes across because I know who I’m talking to and what I’m talking about. That’s where politicians go wrong: They have nothing at all in common with normal young people.
This is where Adam grew up: Tensta, a suburb of Stockholm. He named himself after the place. It’s a notoriously troubled neighbourhood. Adam’s father came from Gambia. Like many others in the Tensta 9)projects, he was involved with drugs and crime, and he soon disappeared from Adam’s life. Adam still lives with his mother, who’s part Swedish and part Finnish. She says Adam was always ambitious and she’s convinced that growing up in Tensta was actually good for him.
Adam’s Mother: I think when you live in a multi-cultural neighbourhood, that defines you. Then you have to learn to respect people from different cultures, religions and with different skin colours.
Locals here feel they’re living on the margins of Swedish society and they’re the people Adam sings about. He’s not ashamed of where he comes from and he wants others to realize that there’s more to it than they might think.
A picture of Adam’s class hangs on the wall of his former school. He tells us he always loved words and he’s always found it easier to write than to talk. His teachers say they would never have expected him to become a hip-hopper—as a boy, he was much quieter than other students.
These days, Adam, who’s now 25, is always on the move. Music takes up most of his time but he’s keen to work on issues that mean something to him, like 10)immigration.
Adam: I want to draw attention to issues that are usually ignored. That’s what’s so great about hip-hop. It’s direct and honest, it’s 11)in-your-face.
Adam realizes that by changing his name he’s made himself a spokesman for Tensta. He knows the people there and he’s personally experienced their reality. He’s become their mouthpiece, and it’s a lot of responsibility. Adam Tensta has done well for himself. He’s making a living as a musician. His next goal is to write a book.
