As virtuous men pass mildly away,
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say,
The breath goes now, and some say no;

John Donne（约翰·多恩，1572—1631），英国诗人，“玄学派诗歌（Metaphysical school of poetry）”的代表人物，作品主要有《海上风暴》、《圣十四行诗》等。
John Donne出生在伦敦一个富有的天主教商人家庭，曾在牛津和剑桥接受高等教育，后到伦敦学习法律。1601年，在议会工作期间，他因与埃格顿夫人的侄女私奔并结婚而被革职，并遭逮捕。出狱后生活潦倒，抛弃仕宦梦改信国教，于1615年成为牧师。从1621年至死，Donne任伦敦圣·保罗大教堂的教长。他任教职期间作了大量布道演讲，后结集出版，成为英国散文精品。
作为玄学派大师，Donne走的是一条以形象比喻传达思想，通过思想表达感情的新路。《离别辞：莫悲伤》是1611年作者随罗伯特·特鲁里爵士出使巴黎时，在临行前赠给妻子的诗。在这首诗中，Donne把夫妻关系喻为圆规两只脚的关系。妻子是定脚，坐镇中心，当丈夫离别（即一只脚移动）时，妻子（定脚）也随之转动，喻夫妻虽然分离，却彼此相连，互相支撑。只有妻子（定脚）坚定地坐镇中心，才“能使我的圆圈圆得完美”，暗示爱人的忠贞不渝才能使他一生美满。该诗赞颂了恋人之间更深层次的精神之爱，不因分离而受到破坏。
