于1964年组建，1973年解散的The Velvet Underground（地下丝绒乐队）是摇滚史上一支极其重要的乐队，他们在其短暂的艺术生涯中不断地突破自我，大胆尝试，给后来许多乐队带来了启迪和精神鼓舞。在摇滚史上有一个关于The Velvet Underground的老笑话：当年几乎没有多少人买这个乐队的第一张唱片，但买了唱片的那些人后来都组建了他们自己的乐队。
The Velvet Underground 1964年刚组建时正处于“披头士热”和迷幻剂被普遍使用的年代。在倡导探索精神的那个摇滚年代，The Velvet Underground坚持运用大胆、富于攻击性的极端手段，提出反时代潮流的意识，道出社会的无力，使摇滚乐不再只是单纯的音乐，而是充满自省与疾呼社会不平的音乐。
在20世纪60年代末，他们经常被误解、谩骂，但更多的是受到冷落。不过，The Velvet Underground还是被人们认为是美国1965年之后最重要的摇滚乐队之一。
